Chemical Dependency is a condition which is primary, progressive and incurable. If untreated, many chemically dependent people will die prematurely. The condition is marked by an obsession and compulsion to use alcohol and drugs despite negative consequences. It is also marked by withdrawal and tolerance.
Progression
(It always progresses toward the worse)
1. Biological Progression (tolerance, and physical decline)
2. Social/Relationship Progression
3. Psychological Progression
4. Spiritual Progression
5. Mental Progression.
Relapse Progression –
It gets slower and harder to recover with each try. (Will that rob you of motivation to keep trying?
Periods of abstinence can get shorter and shorter.
Financial Progression – Cost of using, cost of recovery.
What Progress have you made toward resolving your ‘issues’
“You pick up where you left off”
You have given yourself permission to use, now you are simply negotiating the speed of the progression.
I have NEVER received a phone call from family saying a patient has returned to using and things got soooo…much better (they always tend to be worse).
I have never had someone return to treatment from relapse and say “Boy that was wonderful, I can’t wait to go back to using”

This article is very true. So many people with chemical dependency problems think that after they have stayed away from chemicals for a while, they can do 'just a little bit.' It's like someone who quit smoking thinking that they can smoke 'just one cigarette' and not smoke as much as they did before.
