Stigma Still Exisits in Receiving Drug AddictionTreatment

May 21st, 2007 · No Comments

The National Institute on Drug abuse released a press release on May 7, 2007 concernining drug addiction treatment. The essence of the study indicated that only about 40 percent of people diagnosed with drug dependence have gotten any kind of treatment or had any sort of intervention and all. It also went on to say that people with drug abuse diagnosis only 8% entered into treatment.

The National Institute of Health director Dr. Zerhouni, stated that even though we know the drug addiction treatment works, the lifetime treatment rates of people receiving treatment are significantly lower than the treatment rates of other major psychiatric disorders.

The National Institute of Drug abuse director Dr. Volkow, expressed concern because the treatments rates are so low and we do have effective drug interventions. She goes on to stress that we must encourage the public to view Addiction as a brain disease and that it needs to be treated like any other product brain disease.

It appears that once again we're faced with stigmatization of drug and alcohol dependence. it appears people are just not coming forward to get help with their problems or is not being picked up and assessed by primary care givers. Despite availability prople enter drug addiction treatment in numbers below the norm for other diseases.

This data was gathered in 2001 and 2002 for face-to-face interviews with more than 43,000 United States adults.
