Prescription pill addiction is not the most commonly thought of type of addiction, people instantly think of addictions to alcohol or illegal drugs. Most people do not think about the possibility of an addiction to a prescription drug; however, prescription pill addiction is becoming more and more common in the United States. Believe it or not, illegal drug usage among teenagers is actually on the decline, but on the negative side, prescription pill addiction is on the rise among out teenagers today. Since this is becoming a growing problem it is important that people become more aware of this type of addiction so they can spot it in friends or family members.
In some cases people end up being addicted to prescription drugs unknowingly as their body becomes more and more dependent on the drug. On the other hand, some teenagers and even adults actually seek out prescription drugs because of the great feelings they get when they take them. In fact, there is actually quite a market for prescription pills on the street, with pills like Vicodin selling for up to $10 for one pill or oxycodone for $20-$50.
Once a person becomes addicted to prescription pills you will usually begin to see some changes in them that may give you a clue that they are suffering from an addiction. First of all they may begin to take more and more of the drug and they will not be able to stop on their own. They may start taking higher dosages of the drug or they may also begin to take the prescription pills more frequently. Usually people who become addicted to prescription pills also begin to withdraw. The people, activities, and places that used to be so important to them may be totally left by the wayside. As the addiction grows, resentment may even occur towards close friends and family members, especially if they try to help.
If you or someone you know is showing signs of a prescription pill addiction it is imperative that you seek professional help. It is important to understand that both a physical and psychological addiction to the drug can occur, so it is going to be important that both problems are addressed. There are many great drug treatment centers that can help people who are addicted to prescription pills.
You can find help if you are having problem with an addiction or someone you know is having the problem. You can call Narcotics Anonymous for help, or you can check in your phone book for local treatment centers in your area. Many of the programs out there are absolutely free, so you have nothing to lose. It is absolutely essential that you get help immediately. Nice article, Bill. Prescription drug abuse and addiction is a major problem among the nation's elderly–a hidden addiction in many ways.

In my research I learned that there is an increase in the use of 2 types odrugs among teenagers, prescription pills and, oddly enough hallucinogens. Tripping is making a comeback from the 1960-70's

My mom says she doesn't have a problem cause the doctors give them to her. I can't get her to see what she is doing to our family. Not just that but now she hates us for telling her she needs help. I have lost my mom to prescription drugs ( it does happen)!

Prescription pills can be the end all solution to the one who is taking them. Meaning, you get that really good feeling the pain is gone, the pain of everything is gone. You become the "yes" girl, you're great to those who have no idea what's going on with you until you start to come down and then need more and more to function. You need them to get up in the morning and get going so you have all the energy in the world to function as a wife and a mom and a working woman. You need them to get through your day and your pain. And it's true you think you don't have a problem because they were prescribed to you therefore, it's ok you must not have a problem. It's so hard to see yourself that you have a problem because you don't put yourself in that addict role because God forbid you are the problema nd cause of the trouble at home. It's so easy to hide it from those who don't see the real you at home, barely able to get out of bed sometimes because you upped your dose and took one too many and then figuare out well if I lower this I will be ok. It really takes a lot to get through to somebody who has the problem and the addiction is bad. Just keep on them, take them away do what you can, you can help them, it is horrible and but getting them back is so worth it.

I strongly suggest you get some local professional help. Ask around for an addictions counselor or call a detox center for references. Go to a local NA meeting and talk to someone about your addiction, those meetings are free. Go to this link to identify local treatment centers in your area.

Take a look at.

Follow the prescription, more is not better. Anti-depressants typically take 2 or 3 weeks to start to work, so you must be patient and follow up.
