Fetal Alcohol Syndrome FAS: Quick Facts

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (fas) consists of the combination of central nervous system difficulties, inhibited growth, characteristic facial features that occur in an individual. These are a direct result of the mother consuming alcohol during her pregnancy. FAS represents the severe end of an entire spectrum of birth defects brought on by consuming alcohol during pregnancy.

 

1. Alcohol related birth defects are 100% preventable if a pregnant woman does not drink alcohol.

 

2. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and other alcohol-related birth defects cannot be cured. Maternal alcohol abuse causes permanent damage.

3. There is no known safe amount of alcohol that a pregnant woman can drink without risking damage to her unborn baby.

4. Alcohol interferes with and kills specific cells in the developing brain of the baby. The pattern of cell death and subsequent defects vary with the stage of development at the time of alcohol exposure.

5. Alcohol can damage the baby at any stage of its development.
