Drug addiction is a very serious social problem and difficult to treat as the problem is usually not confined to drug abuse alone. It is easy to say "cold turkey" treatment but it is very difficult in practice to implement it without proper medical supervision.

Heh, nice twist on the 12 steps. Something like that should be pinned up at an AA or NA seminar, title it; 12 Steps to Finishing Yourself Off.

Recovery from addiction can be a difficult process, especially in the beginning. A treatment program should be designed as a positive and self-esteem building experience that will be proven as an effective long-term sobriety.

Jane,
With the disclaimer of not offering medical advice…etc. Here is my opinion. It is an opiate. Opiate withdrawal, though it can be uncomfortable does not put one at risk of seizures as alcohol and benzodiazipines can.
Everyone is different, some have more symptoms some less. If one stops taking it you can onset of short term effects can be 4-12 hours. Effects decline over say 1-2 weeks.
The sad reality is peoples fear of the withdrawal keeps them using rather than going through it.
Physical symptoms may include: restlessness, muscle pain, aches, sleep disruption, diarrhea, vomiting, cold flashes, sweats, watery eyes, runny nose loss of appetite, irritability.
I have personally seen hundreds of withdrawals from all classes of drugs and opiates generally have more craving and mental preoccupation than scary physical effects.
Again, everyone is different and factors include ones health, amount taken, for how long, what else you were taking with it etc. I definitely recommend getting help with all detox efforts off any drug.
Bill
