A Review of The Complete Guide to Affordable Drug and Alcohol Rehab

by Bill Urell on

Important Notice:The day after I posted this review the book was pulled down. I am hoping it is for revision and will soon be available agian. I will post an update when this happens

One factor that frequently prevents people from seeking treatment is cost. This review of The Complete Guide to Affordable Drug and Alcohol Rehab should eliminate that objection. This resource book consists of two major sections:

The first section (7 chapters, 114 pages), provides information for friends, family and the person needing help to identify the need for treatment, starting the selection and admission process, and funding it.

The second major section (315 pages) is, of course, the list of drug and alcohol rehabs.

Pros:

1. It exceeds expectations, plain and simple. If you are expecting just a list you will get much more. The info really cuts through the confusion of ‘Where do I start?’ You will be able to take some concrete action.

2. Extremely well written, authentic, information presented in a clear, easy to read manner by professionals. It won’t be over your head.

3. The information on types and levels of treatment available, as well as specialized rehabs is accurate, fair and objective.

4. Value: The information in this book is incalculable when it can be the instrument that breaks down a barrier to treatment. It cost $19.95.

Cons:

1. The website links in the State By State Funded Treatment Help Directory do not work. Phone numbers and hotline numbers are provided.(That phone can be so hard to lift sometimes, though).

2. The claim of 1,500 centers listed may be subject to some interpretation. There are two agencies that have multiple sites in each state that can account of a lot of that number, as well as state and federal listings.

3. The website gently referred to in the book for updates and more information, is largely a referral source to their own treatment centers which are entirely reputable, but not free or particularly low cost.

Summary:

This book has such good information, I printed out a copy for reference, and it is in my office. I thought it would just be a list of drug rehabs, but it is so much more. If you are beginning to ask questions and explore how to get help for your self or a loved one, this is a tremendous resource and will answer a ton of your questions. I usually do not do endorsements because of the poor quality of some information out there, but this is a jewel.
