I believe that treating addiction is a process. It's definitely not easy. Even if you're determined to do it, you will still have to go through difficulties. That's where drug and alcohol rehabs help, make it an easier process. I also believe that the most important step is to address the root cause that drives these behaviors. And of course, support helps a lot too.

If it is really that easy, then why are there so many cases of addiction around us..there's always someone we know that's affected by this. It helps to be informed and to be open minded about these situations.

I'm also disagree with Old Heathen comment. I've learned a lot about how human mind works and I'm a certified hypnotherapist. You can't just stop addiction with your conscious mind.

The drive to addiction comes from sub-conscious mind. Yes, I've seen people can stop from addiction, in this case with alcoholism. I've helped people stop from smoking addiction with several therapy session.

It's not easy to stop when you don't know what's driven you to drink at the first place.

OLD HEATHEN ; what you said shows alot of immaturity, ignorance, & that was very opinionated. Why the hell would they put in so much effort to help problem drinkers if it was just a decision when you wake up in the morning? i must admit , they do have to wake up one day and decide to start it. but once they become a problem drinker then it is completely out of their control. they no longer think about it. kind of just becomes what they do. why would they waist their time in these rehabilitation facilities if it was just that easy? to just 'stop' .

I have seen so many cases of relapse. When a person is under any kind of mental stress he has more chances of getting back to the alcohol. I think it can really depend on case to case basis whether a treatment will be successful or not.

heathen:
OMG please read the big book! Before you give an opinion. The ansewers are there, it's not about will power. It's an obsession of the mind with a physical allergy. Go straight to the Dr. Opinion. The truth will set you free

Old Heathen, you are severely mistaken, or perhaps you didn't read the article clearly. Alcohol is an addiction! If it was so easy to quit then this article, AA, rehab centers, and thousands of other things would not be around right now. For millions of people, it is not just about simply deciding not to drink one day. They need help and intervention. What you said is like telling a person with cancer to just "get rid of it".

You have got to be kidding me! If I could have stopped I would have. You think people enjoy letting everyone down? If I had answer for every time my family asked me why I drank, I would be a trillionaire. I just did not know why. Do yourself a favor and read the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous and perhaps you may become open-minded, honest, and willing enough to see that it is a disease that tells me I don't have a disease.

Nuts!
Don't drink = No more problem. It's really just that simple.
There is no such thing as a "disease' that makes one get drunk! LOL!
Most people stop bad substance behavior simply by stopping. This is a Fact.
