Ecstasy should be up closer to the top of the list because it is very easy to get addicted to it and so hard to stop doing. Marijuana doesn't even diverse to be on this list because physical addiction is very rare and people can be mentally addicted to anything. Marijuana should really be at the very bottom of this list. especially when you consider that marijuana ,unlike most drugs, has health benefits that a lot of people could use to improve there quality of life... but are government isn't really interested in are quality of life... there more interesting in making money. Making marijuana illegal makes them more money than if it was legal. So it has nothing to do with the health risks because aren't really any. Lets look at nicotine for a minute ... totally legal to those over the age of 18. 1 in 5 deaths in america are caused by smoking cigarettes and the average smoker lives 14 years less than none smokers. now let see... Not a single case of death ever recorded in the United States, or even the world has been attributed to the use of marijuana. so there not keeping it from you cause it will hurt you it all just comes down to money. QUESTION AUTHORITY!... PLEASE!

I was very surprised to see that methadone was not on this list. From recent research I heard it has been classified the most addictive substance. The reason is because of the synthetic compounds and how the brain interacts. It also has the longest withdrawal symptoms lasting up to 6 months. This is only used as a substitute for heroin addicted users in treatment programs. It is the last resort in treatment.

On another note nicotine has a dual active nature and that is why it is so addictive. It serves as an upper and downer.

I totally DISAGREE with the order in which these drugs are listed....maybe i'm just a very fortunate person, because i have tried on several occasions to "smoke cigarettes" to try and calm my nerves down,,and they tasted terrible and the smell is almost as unbearable as the taste,,however, a xanax or a klonipin does me so much better...and i have tried probably 15 of the 18 drugs listed,,and out of all of them i think the most addictive one is methamphetamine(smoked),,however, i have ingested it orally,,as well as cocaine,,and i loved smoking both,,didn't care much for snorting them...thought it was a waste..my high just didn't last as long,,,never was much of a drinker,,nor have i EVER INJECTED anything by SHOOTING UP,,thank god,,,because first of all,,when my son was a baby,,i had to give him allergy shots at least 3-5 times per wk..and this hurt me worse than it did him,,right then and there i swore to never do a SHOT of any kind of dope(drug)..and the second reason being,,i have such an addictive personality,,,that i KNOW i would love it..and i don't want to ruin my life anymore from all of the addictions than i've already overcome..after literally "blowing my heart out" from all of the meth and cocaine and prescription pills such as nerve pills,,pain pills, and diet pills,,along with marijuania and some alcohol use,,,i have had to have not 1 but 2 permanent pacemakers and now i have CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE...again this is all thanks to MY LIFE OF BEING HIGH ON WHATEVER I WAS INTO AT THE TIME....but my advice is....if you haven't tried it...then be SMART AND DON'T....i've been clean and sober almost 6yrs...with only 3 slip ups or fall off the wagon's and twice with meth...and 1 time with pot...now however i do still take my klonipin and percocet on a daily basis....but not as often as they are prescribed,,or i wouldn't be able to walk...i only take the klonipin at nite to help me sleep,,,instead of like 4times a day as prescribed,,,and i do take at least 2-3 pain pills a day,,,unlike the 7-8 which are prescribed to me...i've had 3 nervous breakdowns,,and i have alot of back,,neck,,leg,,foot pains,,,due to herniated discs in my neck and back,,with metal plates,,pins,,and screws,,in my legs,,and feet due to surgical procedures...along with carpal tunnel,,fibromyalgia,,chron's disease,,and a tumor on my kidney...lucky to be alive...but i thank god for being the person i've become today and thank him for not letting me overdose many many many times,,if it hadn't been for my mother and all the other great christian's i'd probably be dead by now....

And for all you folks who state facts about which drug is more addictive please read the article entirely before stating comments about the effectiveness of the information.

**“In Health” magazine asked a panel of experts to rank commonly used drugs by their potential for addiction. Because each individual reacts differently based on psychology, physiology, and social pressures, the rankings reflect addictive potential only.**

This study is complete bullshit. I'll say it so blatantly because it is. Methamphetamine is by FAR more addictive when you inject it, then less so if you take it orally, then less so if you snort it, then the least addictive when smoked because it's least powerful in this form. What crap it's all the same drug no matter how you take it, some methods are stronger than the others, I've listed them in order strongest to weakest. And heroin MUST be the second most addictive. What moron says meth is more addictive than heroin? Fucking imbecile!

The fact that marijuana, lsd, peyote, and mescaline are on here in the first place is shameful. None of them have physically addictive properties.
Read more, kids.

Hey, there; just wanted to drop in with a little experience. I'm 16 at the moment and both of my parents are addicted to your second most addictive drug Methamphetamine, smoked.... It's ruined my life. I don't have a mother nor a father due to the fact they cared more about their drugs than me. Lucky for me I was able to move in with my grandma... both my parents are in prison. The sad fact of the matter is, Neither one of my parents tried Meth until about five years ago, now when I look at they I cant even tell who they are. Their faces are scared, their teeth are falling out, their minds circuited towards their only want in this world; they only want the high they received their first time, and they will never get it. Thanks a lot for helping me understand why my life is ruined, drugs are bad, I guess I can only learn from their mistakes.

Okay, I think a lot of the responders need to read the first paragraph:

“Health magazine asked a panel of experts to rank commonly used drugs by their potential for addiction. "

This isn't a list of the 18 most addictive drugs. It's a list of 18 most commonly used drugs. And then experts ranked them by addictiveness. That's why LSD is on there - it's not addictive, the experts know it's not addictive, it's just common.

"Mescaline is found in several cactus species, such as Peyote and San Pedro. It is usually smoked in “joints” or pipes, similar to marijuana. "

Misinformation like this completely destroys credibility. I have NEVER heard of anyone 'smoking mescaline'.
