Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

by Bill Urell on

Alcohol use during pregnancy can produce Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

Drinking contributes to a wide range of effects on exposed babies, including attention and hyperactivity problems, problems with social and emotional development learning and memory deficits.

The most serious consequence of a mother drinking during pregnancy is (FAS). Children with FAS have a distinctive set of facial anomalies, growth retardation, and significant learning and/or behavioral problems.

Even children prenatally exposed to lower levels of alcohol may exhibit learning and behavioral problems. So far, a threshold below which no fetal damage will occur has not been established. In other words, any amount of alcohol during pregnancy can be dangerous.

The Surgeon General’s recommendation that women abstain from drinking alcohol during pregnancy remains the safest course.
