I learned about the concept of mindfulness when attending a mental health workshop on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).
Recent research points to a useful therapeutic role for mindfulness in a number of medical and psychiatric conditions, notably chronic pain and stress. Mindfulness is also useful in the treatment and prevention of depression and substance abuse. Recent research suggests that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy can be used to prevent suicidal behavior from recurring in cases of severe mental illness (Journ. Clin. Psych. 62/2 2006).
Take a look at the minfulness and substance abuse video; if it sparks some interest…happy google-ing.

Didn’t know a thing about mindfulness until reading about it here. Sounds like a very interesting concept, one that’s sure to do some good. Richard Fields is a well respected professional in his field.

Mindfulness is an interesting concept, that’s for sure, and the video makes it evident on how it could be used for treating addiction, especially alcohol addiction. Let’s see it pass the true test and get results.
I’ve read about mindfulness somewhere, but I can’t remember exactly where. As I see it, it’s bound to be getting used in treating addiction, but I believe that further tests need to be conducted. But that’s just me. The video is pretty good too.
In my brief introduction and study of DBT I believe it to be a very practical approach. As a recovering addict I see it as putting a bullseye on the target for goals that are sometimes vague and confusing to newcomers to 12 step recovery.
After all, are we not trying to get addicts to:
1. Make non-impulsive/non-destructive decisions?
2. Value one’s self?
3. Value others?
4. Live a fullfilling life?
The more I learn of DBT the more I see its practicality.
