National Alcohol And Drug Addiction Recovery Month – September 2008

by Bill Urell on

I just got back from West Palm Beach’s celebration of Voices In Recovery. Our community held an information fair aimed at raising awareness of addiction problems in the general community. We had thousands of people in recovery and supporters show up. My biggest take away is that there seems to be a paradigm shift from being anonymous and unseen, to being in recovery and being proud of it, letting people know.

Across the country, people in recovery are celebrating their successes and sharing them with others in an effort to educate the public about treatment, how it works, for whom, and why. Because these successes often go unnoticed by the broader population, Voices for Recovery provides a vehicle for people to share their recovery stories.

The principle of anominity promoted by 12 step programs, has a very valid purpose within those organizations.

However, it can certainly work against spreading the word on the dangers of drug and alcohol addiction. When it comes to legislation, prevention and treatment availability, the more representation, the more action.

this kind of organization plays a big role in our recovery. but it is still very important for us to have discipline. it is not that easy to overcome alcohol abuse but we can do it if we really want to. we should help ourselves in the best way that we can.

It’s great to see organizations and communities forming to step up and help educate others about addiction. It is still unknown to some people, and it’s important to have people willing to tell their stories with others in the hopes of preventing it happening to others.

I feel that it is a person determination that helps the most. These centers do provide you help bit the major factor is the persons will. It is not easy to resist the cravings, but with family support a person can do this task with lot of ease.
