The main issue with Alcoholism is its perception as an acceptable lifestyle choice instead of an insidious and dangerous drug. It has been proven in several European countries to be more expensive in terms of lives taken and economic cost to society than heroin!

I am sure we all know someone that has or has had a problem with alcohol. Alcoholism is such a dangerous additions, it is extremely accessible and you are under constant reminder of it. Every other commercial today seems to be about buying your buddy a beer or going to the bar after work. The media is not helping one bit.

Great post as usual. There are some small things missing, like the fact that other genetic effects related to alcoholism could impair one's ability to earn (impulsivity, risk taking, etc.). Also, I think that the positive effects of alcohol consumption have by now been, at least to some extent, been identified as existing in other high-antioxidant foods. The rest of the effect may be a socioeconomic one.

All the same, great article!

thanks for the post.
It makes sense that alcoholics and addicts might tend to make less money at their jobs. I was a bit surprised that that non-drinkers might also make less, but then realized that I've found myself as recovery addict to not go out with the boss afterwork because I don't want to be around drinking. It has occured to me that I've been passed over for a job promotion in the past.

Very interesting article. So alcoholism has an opportunity cost assigned to it: as you said, instead of learning/being productive, alcoholics would rather take things easier etc..

Glad you pointed out the positive benefits of drinking alcohol. It's true, drinking alcohol may provide health benefits and even social benefits if you drink to socialize.

But as in anything, the law of diminishing returns apply here as well; In simple terms, consuming more and more alcohol will provide less and less benefits, until it comes to a point wherein you're worse off compared to your state when you didnt drink alcohol yet.
